Mayor Norquist Watch

So does John O. still insist that only evil, black welfare mothers engage in illicit sex at the taxpayers' expense? Given the damages the city may have to assume in a potential Federal civil rights suit, this could cost all those "hard-working white taxpayers" (endeared to the mayor because of his anti-welfare drumbeat) a lot more than was ever spent on any welfare mom and her kids.

As for the timing, Norquist made his admission within a few minutes of the announcement of the jury's award to the thre widows in the Miller Park suit. It was a cynical attempt to hide behind what he thought would be the bigger story. But rest assured, Big John, Milwaukee's fascination with the Clintonesque behavior of its own chief executive will contine unabated for a long, long time.

Budget

Remember when Wisconsin used to be a progressive state? Remember when we would be the first state to find ways to make government responsive to citizens? Read Pingree's remarks about how the Maine legislature tackled the prescription drug issue and then compare that with what our Lambeau Lobby Lapdogs in Madison pulled off last session. What a contrast. And what a disgrace for Wisconsin. --Tony Palmeri

Rep. Mike Huebsch (R-Onalaska) referred to Rep. Tim Carpenter, D-Milwaukee, who was leading the opposition to the resolution, as "the queer from the 9th" District. Carpenter has not discussed his sexual orientation.

In the e-mail, Huebsch also urged fellow Republicans not to back down on the resolution in the face of Democratic objections.

"If we budge an inch on this (issue), we do not belong in the majority. This fight means more to the regular guy public than prescription drugs, wetlands and campaign finance (reform) combined," all issues that Carpenter has championed. "We do not want agreement on this one.

We want this fight."

Winnebago County Dems Take Shot

Democratic Party of Wisconsin 6th C.D.

For Immediate Release

January 4, 2001

Contact: Polly Briley, 1st Vice-Chair

920-428-5227

Congressman Tom Petri, W-6th, was bypassed in his bid to chair the Committee on Education and Workforce Development. Petri had served as the vice chairman, was the senior member on the committee and lobbied heavily for the appointment. But a secret ballot by the 27-member GOP steering committee passed him over for a more junior member who had shown leadership in his Congressional career.

New committee chair John Boehner of Ohio has been in Congress half as long as Petri (10 years versus 20) and has already served as House Republican Conference Chairman, twice. He was also a member of the "gang of seven" that demanded House reforms following the House banking scandal, which brought Mr. Petri so much attention.

During his reelection campaign Mr. Petri stressed his appointment to the Chair position as the main reason he should be returned to Congress. He threatened a loss of stature for Wisconsin if he lost and was replaced by someone who would be forced to remain in the wings, or the back bench as insiders call it.

The Appleton Post Crescent and the Oshkosh Northwestern referred to this Chairmanship as their primary reason for endorsing Mr. Petri. They noted Wisconsin has been low on the totem poll in Congressional leadership and Petri would bring us a much needed voice, forgetting he had been in Congress for 21 years apparently with laryngitis.

So, instead of having a new Congressman as a rising member, the 6th CD is left with nothing.
