1. August 3rd Troop Withdrawal Referendum Meeting. The next meeting of citizens for and Iraq troop withdrawal referendum will be held on Wednesday, August 3rd at 7 p.m. in the basement of the Oshkosh Public Library. In the latest poll data available on Iraq, "51%, say the Bush administration deliberately misled the public about whether Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction — the reason Bush emphasized in making the case for invading. The administration's credibility on the issue has been steadily eroding since 2003." See a summary of the poll results: http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2005-07-26-poll-us-not-winning-iraq_x.htm

Iraq War veteran Jason Moon is currently in Cambridge, England. He email the local Green Party recently and said, "Hello friends, had a wonderful anti-war talk at an Islamic coffee house for a group called Respect here in Cambridge. They're very excited to know that the movement is strong in Wisconsin. See ya when I get home, Moon"

2. Any Question for Green?: This Thursday Cheryl Hentz and I will interview Congressman and gubernatorial candidate Mark Green (R-Green Bay) for an entire hour for the Eye on Oshkosh program. If you have questions for Green, please email to me at tony@tonypalmeri.com or palmeri @uwosh.edu. Please avoid cheap shot or self-serving questions--I can come up with enough of those on my own (:-).

3. Audio Interviews with Heck, McCabe: Radio Commentary was fortunate in the last two weeks to be able to interview two of the most valuable players in the Wisconsin political reform community, Jay Heck of Common Cause in Wisconsin and Mike McCabe of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign. As mentioned in an earlier update, the UW Oshkosh WSRT studios are undergoing construction to become ADA compliant. In the Heck interview we missed the first 5 minutes or so and I sound like I'm in an echo chamber. But overall these two interviews provide insight about state government.

4. Eric Chaet on Justice and Democracy. Northeast Wisconsin author/Activist Eric Chaet recently emailed me some thoughts about Justice and Democracy: http://www.tonypalmeri.com/chaet2.htm

5. The Muhahideens Reagan Roots: Check Our Juan Cole's blog for August 2 for some insight regarding how the so-called terrorists were created http://www.juancole.com/

6. Life in Afghanistan Installment #2: A special to the ABV Army Times http://www.geocities.com/abvarmy/LIA.html

7. Pulitzer Prize Awaits Rigorous EAA Reporting. The annual Experimental Aircraft Association in Oshkosh continues to exaggerate its attendance figures. This year the state's largest newspaper, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reported the bogus attendance figures. I wrote this letter to the reporter: http://www.tonypalmeri.com/EAA.htm

I think a Pulitzer Prize awaits the journalist who decides to do some rigorous investigation into the history of the EAA's relationship with Winnebago County. The extent to which the local politicians have been conned into giving EAA just about everything it wants based on false attendance and economic impact data along with the establishment press' enabling of the organization's hyperbole are things that Mike Wallace could have a field day with on 60 minutes. Although the story more properly belongs on Jon Stewart's Daily Show.

Most Americans are not aware of the extent to which the military censored reporting from Japan after the bombings, as noted here: http://www.mediainfo.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001001583

George Weller was the first reporter in Nagasaki after the bombings. His dispatches were censored for 60 years and have only been recently released by his son. Here they are:

10. Remembering Suburbia: From Connie Kanitz of the Fox Valley Peace Coalition,

Come see the movie: End of Suburbia
Thursday, August 11
7 pm at Fox Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2600 E. Philip Lane, Appleton
This viewing hosted by Fox Valley Democracy for America.

This provocative documentary by Canadian director, Gregory Green is a regular on the film-festival circuit and examines the history of suburban life and the wisdom of the distinctly American way of life. A post-World War II concept, suburbia attracted droves of people, giving rise to sprawl and all that comes with it--good and bad. How has the environment been affected by this lifestyle, and is suburbia sustainable, especially with the dwindling supply of oil? Come view the 78 minute DVD and join in an informal discussion following the film.
If you are interested in viewing the film at home or have another place in mind to show it, contact Barbara Hoffman at 730-1917 or bhoffman18@juno.com
