of Reactionary Politics with
Joy Cardin of Wisconsin Public Radio here: http://clipcast.wpr.org:8080/ramgen/wpr/jca/jca050414b.rm
2. Palmeri's Open Letter to America's College Students: The May Media
Rant is a reflection on the Kent/Jackson St. tragedies written as an open letter
to college students http://www.tonypalmeri.com/mediarants37.htm

Scene. Locations are here:http://www.valleyscene.com/where.html
Amy Goodman did an outstanding feature on Kent/Jackson that is worth
looking at: http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=05/05/04/1342257
3. Barnhill Advisor of the Year: Dr. David Barnhill, UW Oshkosh
Director of Environmental Studies and Advisor for the Student Environmental
Action Coalition, has been named Outstanding Organizational Advisor of the Year.

5. Pyramids: The always irreverent Mark Fiore has figured out the world
via an expanded food pyramid analysis: http://www.markfiore.com/animation/pyramid.html
6. Five Most Murderous Countries for Journalists: Because journalists
in the United States are mostly protected lapdogs of the powerful, we don't
always appreciate what a deadly profession it is around the globe. On World
Press Freedom Day (May 3), the Committee to Protect
Journalists announced the five most murderous countries for journalists:

7. Appleton Council Cops Out on Patriot Act: In spite of the valiant
efforts of local citizens, the Appleton Common Council refused to join the growing
number of cities that are saying NO to the PATRIOT Act: http://www.wisinfo.com/postcrescent/news/archive/local_20902454.shtml

to love stories like this http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/223201_west06.html
12. Kucinich Blast Dean's War Sell-Out: Polls show that more than 50%
of the American public now believes that the Iraq War was not worth fighting.
Naturally, the Democrat Party leadership chooses THAT moment to announce support
for the war. Dennis Kucinich wrote a tense note to Howard Dean about
it: http://www.commondreams.org/views05/0504-21.htm
13. Ben on the Nuclear Stockpile: As in Ben Cohen of Ben &
Jerry's http://www.kintera.org/site/pp.asp?c=irKQL0NSE&b=667499
14. Winnebago Peace and Justice Center Announcements:
- WPJC MEETING Sunday, May 8 at 6:00pm
- KFC PROTESTS CONTINUE--From Steve Barney: The daily KFC Restaurant
demos are going fairly well, so I have decided to
extend them to May 12, and round it out to a full month of daily action in
support of PETA's campaign to persuade KFC to adopt and enforce some
substantial animal welfare requirements for the factory farms and slaughterhouses
that supply 750,000,000 chickens/year to its restaurants.
Again, please join me on any days that you can:
- Noon - 1 PM
KFC: 1805 JACKSON STREET (corner of Jackson St. and Murdock Ave.)
Oshkosh, WI
- People have been getting more curious, to the point where they are
starting to come over and talk to me, and take an info flyer. This is
a good.
- For more info, see PETA's KFC boycott web site <http://
www.kentuckyfriedcruelty.com>, and read this article, which was
coauthored by
the most influential and controversial (like Socrates) philosopher of
our
time: "Echoes of Abu Ghraib in Chicken Slaughterhouse" <http://dawnwatch.com/
oped-july25-2004.htm>. It relates the Iraqi prisoner torture to
this KFC-
supplying slaughterhouse <http://www.peta.org/feat/moorefield/

- Shanty Town, May 14, 5pm to May 15, 8am, Grand Opera Square
- AREA STUDENTS SPENDING A NIGHT IN A CARDBOARD SHANTY TOWN IN GRAND
OPERA
SQUARE.
- AmeriCorps of Oshkosh is organizing a community event to raise
awareness of
people affected by war and natural disaster, in cooperation with the American
Red Cross and Shelter For Life International. The event will be held at
the
Grand Opera Square in Oshkosh on Saturday, May 14, 2004, from 5pm to 7am.
- During this community event, students of all ages, from a number
of schools in
Oshkosh and surrounding communities will build a Shanty Town with cardboard
boxes in which they will spend the night. This is a very practical way
for
students to identify with people who have lost their homes and belongings
due
to a disaster. Students will be required to be accompanied by their parents.
- AmeriCorps is a non-profit organization, which is part of the
Corporation for
National and Community Service. AmeriCorps members, along with
representatives of American Red Cross and Shelter For Life, will help
educate
the students and parents on disaster and prevention measures. The students
will also design creative messages of hope, love and peace on a sheet
of
paper. These sheets will be connected together to form Peace Quilts. Shelter
For Life will distribute these Peace Quilts to countries where they are
working, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Sri Lanka and Tajikistan.
- In addition, students will receive pledge sheets to raise funds
for Shelter
For Life, a non-profit, humanitarian relief and development organization
based
in Oshkosh. Shelter For Life will use the funds in their worldwide effort
to
restore the lives of people left homeless by war and natural disaster
and to
rebuild their communities.
- Everyone is welcome to check out the cardboard Shanty Town!!
