TonyPalmeri.Com Update For April 13, 2005
1. Palmeri On 4/14 WPR with Joy Cardin: On Thursday morning from 7-8 a.m. (CST) I will be a guest with Joy Cardin (Car-deen) on Wisconsin Public Radio to discuss "Fighting Reactionary Politics." If you live outside Wisconsin and would like to listen, WPR offers a webcast: http://www.wpr.org/webcasting/ They also keep an audio archive; my show should be available by late Thursday: http://www.wpr.org/webcasting/ideas_audioarchives.cfm?Code=jca
2. TonyPalmeri.Com Wins Award: In the last update I mentioned that the website received a nomination in the Oshkosh Public Library Best Website contest. The site ended up getting the "Best News And Commentary" Award: http://www.oshkoshpubliclibrary.org/pages/internetguides/websitecontest.html Here is the coverage in the UW Oshkosh Bulletin: http://www.uwosh.edu/news_bureau/bulletin/news/?module=displaystory&story_id=1149&format=html Jody in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin has found the website valuable in her struggles against the "professionals" trying to do to that city what was done to Oshkosh in 1956. She keeps a blog called The Side Street: http://www.thesidestreet.blogspot.com/
3. Earth Week on Radio Commentary: On Friday from 6:20 - 7:00 p.m. I will be interviewing Nicole DeKeuster and another representatives from the UW Oshkosh Student Environmental Action Coalition about the campus' Earth Week events coming up April 18 - April 23. The Earth Week events can be found here: http://www.uwosh.edu/environ_studies/Activities/earth_week.html
Radio Commentary is on campus radio station WRST-FM 90.3. If you are outside of Oshkosh you should be able to access the program on our webcast: http://www.uwosh.edu/wrst/listenlive.htm (the streaming technology has just been installed so don't be surprised if there are some problems; we still need to get some bugs worked out).
4. Heck/McCabe at UWO on 4/21: As noted in the last update and in the Earth Week announcements, Jay Heck of Common Cause in Wisconsin and Mike McCabe of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign will be at UW Oshkosh on Thursday, April 21 from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. (Reeve Union 227BC) to discuss Political Reform in Wisconsin. Jay recently wrote about the, ahem, "leadership" that Jim The New Democrat Doyle has shown on campaign finance reform: http://www.tonypalmeri.com/doyle2.htm while Mike argues that we needn't tolerate corrupt government: http://www.madison.com/tct/opinion//index.php?ntid=35628&ntpid=2 If you are in the area please do come out to hear these guys speak--they are two of the MVPs of political reform in Wisconsin.
5. Turn the TV off in Oshkosh: Larry King actually asked Jim Caviezel (the fellow who played Jesus in the Mel Gibson slasher movie) if he thought John Paul II was in heaven. I think next time he has on George Clooney he should ask him for some medical advice regarding VIOXX. I didn't like Jerry Mander's Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television when I read it 10 or more years ago, but now I'm starting to think the dude may have been on to something. There will be a Turn off the TV Week in Oshkosh: http://www.oshkoshnews.org/oshblog/2005/04/turn-tv-off-in-oshkosh.html
6. Palmeri's 4 Under 40: Part of the continuing struggle to resist the Gannett Corporation's attempt to define Oshkosh for the outside world: http://www.tonypalmeri.com/pfuf.htm
7. Thank you Jane and Brian: My tribute to a couple of incumbents who lost their seats last Tuesday http://www.tonypalmeri.com/janebrian.htm
8. University, Inc. An interview with Jennifer Washburn, author of University, Inc., one of the better books on the pathetic state of modern academia http://www.corpwatch.org/article.php?id=12066
9. Executive Paywatch: Click this link to find out how much your favorite CEO makes http://www.aflcio.org/corporateamerica/paywatch/ceou/database.cfm Doug Hyde of Honduras B'Gosh is doing pretty well for himself http://www.aflcio.org/corporateamerica/paywatch/ceou/database.cfm?tkr=GOSHA&pg=1 but is a pauper compared to Bob Bohn of Oshkosh Truck: http://www.aflcio.org/corporateamerica/paywatch/ceou/database.cfm?tkr=OSK&pg=1
10. Rich Eggleston's TABOR Blog: Rich Eggleston of the Wisconsin Alliance for Cities http://www.wiscities.org/ now has his own blog space dedicated to the proposed Taxpayer Bill of Rights: http://blogtabor.blogspot.com/ Everyone outside of Wisconsin should take an interest in this; if a Taxpayer Bill of Rights has not already been introduced in your state legislature, it almost certainly will. The Grover Norquist wing of the Republican Party is well organized and very good at getting a serious hearing for these kinds of schemes. As the Boy Scouts would say, Be Prepared. Here's some info about Grover: http://www.mediatransparency.org/people/grover_norquist.htm
Peace,
-Tony
