A very Happy Thanksgiving to all from here at the TonyPalmeri.Com terminal. A brief holiday update:

1. Palmeri on WPR "Week in Review": On Friday, November 26 from 8 - 9 a.m. I will be the "liberal" guest on Joy Cardin's "Week in Review" program on Wisconsin Public Radio. The "conservative" will be Marquette University political scientistJohn McAdams. Information about WPR can be found here:http://www.wpr.org/cardin/index.cfm?strDirection=Next&dteShowDate=2004%2D11%2D26%2007%3A00%3A00

2. Editorial: Too Many Hungry In Land Of Plenty--Kudos to the Oshkosh Northwestern for an excellent Thanksgiving day editorial:http://www.wisinfo.com/northwestern/news/opinion/stories/opinion_18772014.shtml Perhaps the paper should consider endorsing political candidates who really want to do something about poverty (sorry, still suffering from post-election hangover).

3. Observe "Buy Nothing Day" on November 26: You probably noticed your daily newspaper was 10 times thicker than usual today, bloated with ads for the Friday sales. Each year a growing number of people say NO to the hype induced day after Thanksgiving spending spree and refuse to shop. Please consider joining that movement. It's simple--you merely need to refrain from shopping for ONE DAY. Here's more info: http://www.adbusters.org/metas/eco/bnd/ Contact Drew Mueske for information about Buy Nothing Day events planned for the Oshkosh area: drew.mueske@lycos.com

4. Fox Valley Democracy For America to screen Lakoff video: Fox Valley Democracy for America is a progressive grass roots group formed to get the general public talking and actively involved in finding solutions to the issues and problems that are of importance to us all. More info: call Roger Kanitz, Fox Valley DFA coordinator, (920) 722-6438 or email ckanitz@new.rr.com On Sunday, December 5th at 6:30 at the Fox Vally Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (2600 E. Philip Lane, Appleton), the organization will show a 25 minute video, "How Democrats and Progressives Can Win: Solutions From George Lakoff." After the video, I (Tony Palmeri) will facilitate a discussion of the issues raised in it. Video Description: "How Democrats and Progressives Can Win: Solutions from
George Lakoff is a powerful tool for concerned citizens, activists, volunteers - everyone - who wants to communicate effectively. Using television news clips, graphics, and a lively interview with George Lakoff, this 25 minute DVD program will help you understand the critical role of language in today's politics and the ways you can make language work for you. This is a 'How-to' style program with a particular emphasis on this year's presidential election."

5. Greens Help Override Veto: A few weeks ago Winnebago County Executive Jane Van De Hey vetoed a Human Services Department request for $600,000 to assist elderly and developmentally disabled people in need. A group of Greens spoke out in support overriding the veto, which the Board did: http://www.tonypalmeri.com/veto2.htm I should point out that most of the young people mentioned in the story became politically active in part as a result of the Palmeri For Assembly campaign, proving once again that the success of a candidacy cannot be measured solely in terms of vote totals.

6. LWGP Endorses "Power to the Voter" Campaign: The Wisconsin Democracy Campaign has come up with a practical and vitally necessary set of election reforms desperately needed in the state of Wisconsin: http://www.wisdc.org/powertothevoter.html The Lake Winnebago Greens endorse these reform ideas and urge Governor Doyle and the legislative leaders to make good on their promises to clean up our dirty political system.

7. Harris to Challenge Van De Hey: Oshkosh Mayor Mark Harris recently announced his intention to challenge incumbent Jane Van De Hey in the April, 2005 election for Winnebago County Executive. Van De Hey, seeking her third four-year term, upset former state representative Judy Klusman to win the seat in 1997, and then in 2001 narrowly defeated county nursing home administrator Charlene Lowe.
