1. July 23, 2004--A Day That Will Live In Infamy In Northeast Wisconsin: Legendary Green Bay News Chronicle Publisher Frank Wood, now 78 years old, fought for almost 25 years to prevent the Gannett Corporation from destroying his newspaper. His struggle was chronicled in Richard McCord's excellent book The Chain Gang: One Newspaper versus the Gannett Empire (University of Missouri Press, 1996). On July 23, 2004 the Bastards finally defeated Frank Wood. He sold his newspaper to Gannett, closing a chapter on what was an epic struggle against corporate greed. It's impossible to be upset with Frank Wood or accuse him of "selling out." He fought the good fight against a ruthless, unprincipled monster for many years and deserves much admiration and respect for it. News Chronicle editor Tom Brooker told me, "I think Frank Wood had to put years of animosity behind him in making this deal, had to swallow his pride and do what needed to be done in order to preserve the publications and the 170 jobs they supported. It was probably the toughest decision he's had to make in his life and, in my mind, the most courageous." Here's the story: http://www.greenbaynewschronicle.com/page.html?article=126794

Gannett now owns 11 major newspapers in northeast Wisconsin. We are like "Gannett Occupied Territory."

Green Bay News Chronicle Publisher Frank Wood. Mr. Wood sold his newspaper to Gannett after fighting the corporation for almost 25 years.

5. Doyle Exceeds Thompson's Early $$$: From the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign: http://www.tonypalmeri.com/doyle.htm

6. Financing the Election: From Bill Mesler in CorpWatch, "Next week John Kerry will accept the Democratic nomination to run for United States President at a gathering in Boston that will cost over $95 million to produce, the most expensive political party convention in history. The Fleet Center, a sports and entertainment arena where the meeting is being held, is named after the powerful FleetBoston Corporation, the biggest donor to Kerry's Congressional career, a company typical of the corporate benefactors floating the Democratic and Republican parties ever higher on a sea of special-interest cash."
