"I'm running because I cannot sit silently as the Democratic governor and Republican legislature preside over a corrupt political system that rewards well-connected special interests while punishing our community. Hard working citizens of Oshkosh need someone in Madison who will fight to preserve shared revenue, protect our environment, and defend the taxpayer." --Tony Palmeri

"Time For Tony": Palmeri to seek 54th Assembly District Seat as Green Party Candidate

UW Oshkosh professor Tony Palmeri, who received over 8,300 votes in his 1996 run for the 54th District State Assembly, announced today he would seek the 54th District seat in 2004 as a Green Party candidate.
"I'm running because I cannot sit silently as the Democratic governor and Republican legislature preside over a corrupt political system that rewards well-connected special interests while punishing our community," said Palmeri. "Hard working citizens of Oshkosh need someone in Madison who will fight to preserve shared revenue, protect our environment, and defend the taxpayer."
Palmeri, who ran as a Democrat in 1996, said he was running as a Green because both major parties are addicted to politics as usual. "At a time when the state is crying out for LaFollette style clean government on behalf of the people, the Republicans and Democrats give us a 'graft tax' that the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign estimates as costing each taxpayer over $1,300 per year," said Palmeri. "As a Green I'll fight to get the graft out of the system and give the government back to the people."
The Lake Winnebago Green Party actively recruited Palmeri to run for the seat. "Tony speaks to the Green values of social justice, protecting our environment, and respect for grassroots democracy," said UW Oshkosh Environmental Studies Director and Green Party leader David Barnhill. "With Tony in office, no citizen will be left behind."
Palmeri is an associate professor of communication at UW Oshkosh. Since 1996 Palmeri has been elected to two terms as chair of the department of communication, elected to a term as president of the faculty senate, and served for 5 years as president of the UW Oshkosh Association of University of Wisconsin Professionals. He maintains his own daily news website (tonypalmeri.com) and has produced and co-hosted over 300 episodes of "Commentary," an award winning, hard hitting yet fair television talk show. His monthly column "Media Rants" appears in the independent Valley Scene newspaper. Click here to see what citizens are saying about Tony.
