Palmeri Endorses Call For Pre-Primary Debates
In an April 23, 2004 editorial, the Oshkosh Northwestern called for a debate among the 4 announced candidates for the 54th assembly district seat. Refuting incumbent Gregg Underheim's call for a debate after the September primary, the Northwestern said, "Underheim suggested that a debate after the Democratic primary would be beneficial for voters. We disagree. A debate between all four candidates before the Democratic primary is what the voters need."
The Palmeri For Assembly campaign endorses the Northwestern's call for pre-primary debates. "Any candidate who refuses to debate until after the primaries shows that he is part of the same politics as usual that has paralyzed state government," said Palmeri. "I applaud the Northwestern for taking a strong stand on the side of the voters."
Palmeri calls for "open" debates in which the 4 candidates face questions from average voters. "None of the candidates should be allowed to control the debate format," said Palmeri. "We should have a series of town hall type forums in which real people get to ask questions of all the candidates."
Palmeri said that he has already accepted an invitation to participate in a May 6th forum sponsored by the UW Oshkosh New Voters Project. "I look forward to seeing all the announced candidates there," he said. "We owe it to the voters to explain to them how we will deal with the critical issues facing this community."
