I have lived in the 54th Assembly District for 15 years. In that time, I have learned much about the community's historic tradition of hard work, fairness, and common sense. I've watched as the scandal ridden legislature in Madison increasingly ignores the needs of the District while powerful special interests control the Democratic Governor's office and the Republican dominated legislature. I will not stand for it!! I've been lucky to know some social justice fighters to whom I dedicate my campaign: my parents Frank and Gertrude, who taught me the values of hard work, determination, and standing up for what's right; the late Doug McClain, a UW Oshkosh Associate Dean of Students who inspired students and taught everyone in his presence to judge people not by the labels that are given them, but by what's in their hearts; and the late Barbara Sniffen, an emeritus professor of History at UW Oshkosh who taught me how to "fight the bastards." With these kinds of role models, it is impossible for me to stay silent while our state government wallows in mediocrity and corruption. Barb Sniffen especially understood that the professional politicians in Madison respond to one thing: PRESSURE. As a Green, I can pressure the professionals because I do not have to rely on Governor Doyle or the legislative leaders for special favors. In fact, I will regularly get on the floor of the Assembly and publicly expose the special interests that are hijacking our budget, controlling the issue agenda, and making a mockery of our democracy. I'll force the legislature to deal with some vital issues: -Poverty in the 54th District -Protecting Shared Revenue -Clean Government -Protecting Our Environment -Adequate Support for Every School District -Universal Health Care -Tax Fairness -Workers' Rights -Gender Equity -Protecting Civil Liberties Soon I will release detailed positions on these issues.
